SOUTH WEST K9 DETECTIVES

Tobacco & Vapes in the UK
Why are tobacco and vapes a problem
& why use a K9 team?
Not only do illegal tobacco products cost the government and genuine businesses billions of pounds every year, they also pose a risk to public health due to potential non-compliance with UK safety standards and because they expose a greater number of people to smoking. As the popularity of vaping has exploded over the past decade, the production of illegal vapes has never been more profitable, causing growing concern for public health. Along with this, an increasing number of young people are taking up vaping, which can have a substantial effect on long term health; many illegal tobacco and vape products have been found to contain levels of nicotine much higher than advertised and cheap, illegal products make this harmful habit more accessible to both adults and children.

Along with the health risk that vapes can cause to public health, illegal tobacco also poses problems. These products are often sold at low prices to both adults and young people, which both discourages some to give up smoking or introduces smoking to young people, in both instances increasing the risk to public health.
Schools
The use of detection dogs in the identification of illegal tobacco and vapes can provide both a deterrent to those thinking about taking vapes to school as well as providing reassurance to parents that their children's well-being is paramount to the school. Statistics show a huge increase in young people using vapes, who have never smoked. The brightly coloured, flavoured products are appealing, and so the more we are able to discourage their use the better we are able to protect the younger generations.

Ports, retail premises, containers, healthcare environments and vehicles
More and more organisations are finding value in using detection dogs in many scenarios, as they're able to access difficult to reach areas with ease, can cover huge areas in a short amount of time, and have an extremely high success rate; they are precise in finding hidden products with a high degree of accuracy.
